Sweeping in Cranleigh.
Cranleigh claims to be one of the largest villages in England, and whatever the truth of that, it has the character of one — a long main street, a genuine village core, and a great deal of later housing spread around it.
It sits in the Weald, on clay, surrounded by woodland and farmland, and it is well off the gas network in places. That combination puts solid fuel in real service here rather than in an occasional decorative role, and the appliances get worked accordingly.
The older cottages along the street and in the surrounding hamlets have the Wealden characteristics — low openings, wide hearths, timber framing behind later brick. The newer estates have conventional flues and a large population of retrofitted stoves.
