Sweeping in Elstead.
Elstead is a village on the River Wey between Godalming and Farnham, with a green, a medieval bridge, and a good deal of period cottage stock alongside more recent housing.
It is surrounded by common and heath — Thursley and Hankley are on the doorstep — and that puts it firmly in wood-burning territory with the softwood question that comes with pine country. It is also properly rural, with properties down long lanes and tracks where access is part of the job rather than an obstacle to it.
The river position brings the same valley damp found elsewhere along the Wey, and the same consequence: flues that stay cool between fires and hold their deposits rather than shedding them.
