Sweeping in Romsey.
Romsey is a market town in the Test valley with a medieval abbey at its centre and a good deal of period building around it. The river valley position brings the damp that goes with it.
The older properties here have the characteristic problems of buildings altered over centuries — flues that no longer run where the room layout suggests, openings that have been narrowed or widened, and stacks serving rooms that were reconfigured generations ago. None of that is a problem for sweeping, but it does mean assumptions are unreliable.
Out into the valley villages the properties become larger and more rural, with multiple flues, some range and Aga work, and the long drives that are ordinary here.
