Portsmouth is the densest housing we sweep. Portsea Island is one of the most tightly built-up places in the country, and the Victorian terraces that fill it were put up quickly, in long runs, with flues stacked close together and party walls shared the length of a street.
That density is the defining issue. Where flues run within inches of a neighbour's, any breach in the masonry between them stops being an abstract risk. Smoke or fumes crossing from one house into the next is something we do find here, and it is the sort of fault that gives no warning from inside the room where the fire is lit.
Southsea's larger Victorian houses add height and complexity — three and four storeys with flues serving several floors — while the seafront exposure brings salt and wind to stacks that are already old.
