Sweeping in Alton.
Alton is a Georgian market town on the edge of the Hampshire hangers, with a well-preserved centre and a substantial spread of later housing around it. The surrounding villages sit high and are noticeably colder than the coastal parts of our patch.
Altitude and cold are worth naming. A property at Four Marks or Medstead will run its fire harder and longer through a season than one at Emsworth, simply because it is colder for more of the year. More burning means more deposit, and it moves an appliance from a once-a-year sweep into a twice-a-year one.
The town's period stock brings the usual Georgian flues — tall, narrow, and often serving fireplaces on several floors of the same stack.
