Sweeping in Christchurch.

Christchurch is an old priory town at the confluence of the Avon and the Stour, with a period centre, a harbour, and a spread of twentieth-century housing around it.

Two rivers meeting at a harbour means damp in quantity. The older properties near the water carry it in their masonry, and a flue running through persistently damp brickwork behaves differently from one that stays dry — it draws less readily from cold, and it holds what condenses on it. Mild, wet winter weather is when people ring about the smell.

West towards Hurn and Bransgore the properties become more rural and more reliant on solid fuel, edging into New Forest country where wood is the obvious fuel and the seasoning question follows.

Elsewhere in Dorset.

Christchurch sits on the same round as the rest of the county. No call-out fee anywhere on it.
