Sweeping in Dorchester.
Dorchester is the western end of our round — a Roman town with a Georgian and Victorian centre, sitting in the Frome valley with the chalk downland rising around it.
The town's period stock has the flues you would expect: tall, brick, much altered, with the usual mix of live and abandoned routes in the same stack. The valley position adds damp, and the properties nearer the water meadows feel it.
It is the surrounding villages that define the work here, though. This is deep Dorset — cob and thatch in quantity, properties well off the gas network, and long distances between jobs. Thatch is common enough around Dorchester that it shapes the round rather than being an occasional exception, and it is the one building type where we would never encourage anyone to stretch the sweeping interval.

Wood burners & multi-fuel stoves
Off-gas villages burning wood as primary heat, with the seasoning question that always follows.
