Sweeping in Worthing.

Worthing is the largest town on our stretch of coast, and its Victorian and Edwardian terraces are the single biggest concentration of period flues we work on. Street after street of them, all built when every principal room had a fireplace, most with several flues rising through one stack.

Multiple flues in a shared stack is where the interesting problems live. Over a century of alterations — fireplaces removed, walls taken out, extensions added, stacks partially demolished at roof level — flues that were once separate can end up connected. That is how smoke from a downstairs fire appears in an upstairs bedroom, or in the house next door.

Nearer the seafront, exposure adds the usual coastal wear to pointing and flaunching. Inland towards Findon and the Downs the properties get older and more rural, and the work shifts towards inglenooks and heavier wood use.

Elsewhere in West Sussex.

Worthing sits on the same round as the rest of the county. No call-out fee anywhere on it.
